Laser Forte?

Minuet, A Profile

We have two insane cats. One has a problem with plastic, and the other, with laser pointers. Today, we focus on the laser-obsessed cat.

One of these cats thinks it's an otter. An otter with fangs (actually, I think otters do have fangs). Another thinks it's a big game hunter. The last one thinks I'm food some of the time, and is willing to "show me the fangs!" to make the point. These are, of course, all the same animal, a pet slavishly obsessed with a red laser pointer dot.

It's her whole world, reason d'etre, &c. She lurks around my desk during the day, hoping to hear the quiet but distinct click of the laser pointer coming on, and the dot on the floor (don't cats have trouble seeing red?). She has a fixed pattern I must follow, and that she tears through chasing this dot she can just barely see. When I don't give her enough "laser time", she starts crying like a Siamese cat in a voice from deep inside, a baleful voice of dispair and angst. Or, sometimes she'll just get in my chair and not yield until I "make with the laser". I think in all four of these images, she was just thinking and planning new ways to get me to bring out the laser.

Crazy kat.

Anne's Newest Student

No, not really. I can just imagine Minuet learning how to do this ... at 2am every night.

Catster?

Ok, apparently there's a whole website devoted to catblogging. Only this one goes too far and makes it seem like the cats are posting themselves. Yikes!

Have a looksie and tell me I'm wrong.

Forte and Minuet Getting Along Better

Not much to say here ... let the pictures do the talking.

Minuet and Forte can actually share a snuggle now.

Forte is actually grooming Minuet ... for a moment.

In truth, Minuet is a fireball and rarely lets Forte do this. She'd rather chase him around the house and pounce on him. He's gone from being a rather floppy, affectionate cat to a more paranoid one. He's constantly on the lookout for the stripped terror.

Minuet vs. Forte

When we brought Minuet into the house, Forte was (unsurprisingly) pretty hostile to the new critter. He hissed, spat, and even attacked whenever she got within a certain radius of him. It looked pretty bad.

(In these images you can see the two cats actually sharing space in my loft office. Forte was growling in a low rumble, while Minuet was taking it all in stride.)

At day five, they are getting along much better. First came the acceptance in the same room, then the same square meter. Eventually, Forte would allow her to eat alongside him, and Anne reports that they even share the litterbox in realtime. That's a lot of accomodation in short order for Forte.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if Forte was simply trying to warn us about Minuet. You see, she's something of an imp. This morning she knocked over a flower pot, and she's shredding the dining room chairs faster than Forte was (and he's three times her size). He's already laid back while she is wired, frenzied, crazed, and that's between naps. Immediately after feeding, no ankle is safe in the house.

For such a dainty little thing, she's turning into, as our vet told us, "the alpha queen cat" of the house. Poor Forte ... never had a chance. Like Yoda said, "Size isn't everything! Look at me!"

More Monty/Forte

Apparently, Anne wants to name our new cat "Forte". The adoption name for this critter is Monty, which I have grown to like (afterall, with another cat named Python ... it just flows). He's gone from being very skittish to downright kittenish, and was romping all over the downstairs this morning.
